Uganda Would Side with Israel If Defeat Looms, Military Chief Says

(MENAFN) Uganda's top military commander issued a stark warning Wednesday, declaring that his country would intervene militarily in support of Israel should the nation face the prospect of defeat — even as he called for an immediate end to the broader Middle East conflict.

"We want the war in the Middle East to end now. The world is tired of it. But any talk of destroying or defeating Israel will bring us into the war — on the side of Israel," Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, chief of defense forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, posted on X, the social media platform owned by US entrepreneur Elon Musk.

The declaration arrives against a backdrop of sharply rising regional hostilities, fueled by recent US and Israeli strikes on Iran and a wave of retaliatory attacks that have since followed.

Kainerugaba has also captured international attention in recent weeks after announcing his intention to erect a statue in honor of Yonatan "Yoni" Netanyahu — brother of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — who was killed commanding Israeli special forces during the storied 1976 Entebbe hostage rescue operation on Ugandan soil.

Hostilities between Israel and Iran have surged dramatically since late February, with both sides trading large-scale drone and missile barrages, mounting casualties reported across multiple fronts, and the conflict's ripple effects increasingly felt in surrounding nations.
